On the agenda

Biotalys opens the position of Senior Researcher / Science Lead  for the purpose of Job Shadowing, offering PhD candidates (≥ 3rd year of the PhD trajectory) / postdocs affiliated with 1 of the 5 Flemish universities the possibility to see for themselves what tasks and responsibilities come with this particular job function.

A Senior Researcher / Science Lead  at Biotalys is responsible for:

1: Setting up and performing lab experiments

You are responsible for the design and set-up of an experiment. You oversee the work package and determine the different steps to perform an experiment. You execute the experiment and evaluate the results and data. Where needed, you prepare the reagents/solutions/buffers. You can work on multiple projects in parallel. You read reports and literature to resolve the occurring problems. As a (Sr)  Researcher you write Standard Operating Procedures to optimize the execution of the experiment. You are also the first point of contact for (Sr) Research Associates in case of technical questions.

2: Reporting and data

As a (Sr) Researcher you write experimental reports in which you include all the steps you’ve taken to execute an experiment (data, way of working, analyzing, etc). You draw conclusions and define next steps autonomously. As a (Sr) Researcher you look critically at routine or standard analyses and you can link results and data to other experiments.

You are responsible for handing in the reports on time. You upload data in the internal system.

You present the results and data of an experiment across teams. You record observations, notes and data in the lab notebook unambiguously

3: Lab organization and maintenance

You are responsible for the lab organization. You keep the lab and materials clean and you order consumables/reagents when needed. You are also responsible for the maintenance of specific equipment. You escalate it when something is wrong or not working. You handle samples properly and according to Biotalys' sample management system.  You make an inventory of the samples. You have contact with the providers and discuss technical aspects, ask for demo’s, quotes, etc.

4: Communication across teams

As a (Sr) Researcher, you communicate closely with your team, Team Lead or Head in a structured way to anticipate and resolve problems in a timely manner. When samples go from one team to the other, you explain/ask all the details, materials and how they are used. You explain experiments in a correct way to other colleagues and other teams.

You explain the way of working and support new colleagues, students, and interns in the day-to-day operational work.
